Cadiz vs Sevilla Preview
There’s an Andalusian derby at the Nuevo Mirandilla this Saturday but local pride will be pretty far from the minds of both Cadiz and Sevilla fans. This is a real relegation scrap and a first test for new Sevilla boss José Luis Mendilibar.
Cadiz have taken 10 points from their last 4 home games and they are unbeaten in 10 league outings in front of their own fans now. That’s a pretty remarkable transformation for a side that has largely struggled at home since returning to the top flight in 2020. They didn’t have their colourful fanbase behind them in the beginning due to the pandemic, but for the first time since promotion, it feels like they’ve managed to turn their home ground into something of a fortress.
Some smart January business has aided their recent revival too but there is plenty of work still to do if Cadiz want to be playing top flight football again in 2023/24. Their chances of that were hampered by a bad-tempered ending to their last home game against Getafe which saw them concede a 106th minute leveller with red cards dished out to Conan Ledesma and Iza Carcelen who are suspended again here. Gonzalo Escalante is also a significant injury absentee.
Those issues may open up a window of opportunity for Sevilla to make it a day to remember for their new boss. Mendilibar replaces Jorge Sampaoli who was dismissed following a defeat at Getafe just prior to the international break. On paper, Sevilla should have enough quality in their ranks to pull clear of trouble, but they’ll need to adapt quickly to the methods of the former Eibar coach.
We may see a slightly more direct approach from Sevilla under Mendilibar. Despite their struggles, Sevilla have the third highest average possession figures in LaLiga this term, but too often their buildup play has not led to chances and that coupled with significant defensive problems is why they find themselves in a relegation scrap.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of Sevilla side we see here under new management. It’s possible they’ll get something of a boost from the change but Cadiz are consistently registering decent home results and they look capable of at least getting a point here. A draw might not be the worst result for either coach in truth and Cadiz have drawn on their last 3 LaLiga outings.
