Cadiz vs Real Madrid Preview
Real Madrid travel to Cadiz this weekend with this league fixture sandwiched between the two legs of their Champions League Quarter-Final against Chelsea. They won’t get any favours from their hosts though with Cadiz continuing to get results and currently looking good to go on and clinch survival.
That was the only realistic goal this season and it looked a very unlikely one when Cadiz lost their opening five matches to nil. The board could easily have dispensed with Sergio at that point, but they kept faith with the man who steered them to safety last season and they have certainly been rewarded with some excellent results in 2023.
Perhaps the best of the bunch came last weekend as they won 2-0 at Andalusian rivals Betis with January signing and Cadiz supporter Chris Ramos on the scoresheet. They did benefit from two Betis red cards but it’s just one defeat in six league outings for Sergio’s side now and they have enough about them to make this a genuine test for Real Madrid.
The visitors will have their European tie against Chelsea as their top priority with the return clash taking place in London on Tuesday. They are 2-0 up in that tie but we can certainly expect some rotation here despite Carlo Ancelotti claiming that he will name a “competitive side”. Vini Junior and Toni Kroos will not be in it after picking up minor knocks and we’re likely to see some fresh legs introduced across the pitch.
The big question may be over Karim Benzema who is part of the travelling party. Real Madrid’s attacking threat is certainly greatly reduced whenever both Vini and Benzema miss out, but Ancelotti may look to get at least an hour out of the Frenchman. This game isn’t massively important in truth though for Los Blancos who are now 13 points behind Barcelona at the top of LaLiga after losing 3-2 at home to Villarreal last weekend.

Possible XI: Courtois – Nacho, Rudiger, Militao, Vazquez – Valverde, Tchouameni, Ceballos – Rodrygo, Benzema, Asensio (4-3-3)

Score Prediction: Cadiz 1-1 Real Madrid
Cadiz should not be underestimated, particularly at home where they’d gone 10 games without losing prior to Sevilla’s visit last time out at the Nuevo Mirandilla. With Real Madrid’s priorities pretty clearly elsewhere, there’s every chance the home team will collect a useful point in their battle for survival.
