Australian Kimberly Birrell powers into the second spherical at a WTA 250 event in Korea.

Kimberly Birrell’s quest to complete a career-best season contained in the world’s prime 100 has been given a lift, after scoring an opening-round win at a WTA 250 event in Seoul.

The 25-year-old Australian scored a 6-4 6-4 victory towards American qualifier Sachia Vickery on the hard-court event.

That is world No.102 Birrell’s sixth WTA-level main-draw win of the 12 months and units up a second-round showdown towards native wildcard Dayeon Again.

Again, a 21-year-old ranked No.569, upset world No.13 Jelena Ostapenko within the opening spherical.

The resurgent Daria Saville continues to impress in her comeback from knee surgical procedure, qualifying for a WTA 250 event at Hong Kong this week.

The 29-year-old Australian edged out a 4-6 7-5 6-3 victory towards Slovenian Dalila Jakupovic within the ultimate qualifying spherical.

Saville, who has now received 11 of her previous 18 matches, will face third-seeded Belgian Elise Mertens within the opening spherical.

Priscilla Hon is already by to the second spherical, after beating native wildcard Eudice Chang 7-5 7-5.

That is 25-year-old Hon’s first main-draw win at tour-level since beating world No.17 Petra Kvitova on the Adelaide Worldwide in January 2022.
