A number of Australian hopefuls, together with Marc Polmans, have superior to the ultimate qualifying spherical at US Open 2023.

Three Australians, to date, have progressed to the ultimate qualifying spherical on the US Open.

World No.112 Kimberly Birrell is having fun with a career-best run in New York, advancing to the ultimate qualifying spherical for the primary time.

The 25-year-old Australian scored a 6-3 6-4 second-round victory in opposition to in-form Latvian Darja Semenistaja, who not too long ago claimed two ITF titles.

Birrell, who’s aiming to qualify at a Grand Slam match for the primary time in her profession, now performs both American wildcard Fiona Crawley, a 21-year-old ranked No.731, or Hungarian Timea Babos, a former world No.25, for a main-draw spot.

In males’s qualifying singles motion, James Duckworth saved three match factors to maintain his qualifying dream alive.

The 31-year-old Australian wanted nearly three hours to navigate previous Frenchman Terence Atmane, ultimately prevailing 3-6 6-4 7-6(8).

World No.112 Duckworth, who’s trying to earn his place in a Grand Slam draw via qualifying for the primary time since Wimbledon 2014, now faces Kazakhstan’s Timofey Skatov within the ultimate spherical.

It is going to be Duckworth’s first assembly in opposition to the world No.128.

Marc Polmans’ development to the ultimate spherical was a lot smoother, scoring a snug 6-3 6-1 victory in opposition to Austrian Dennis Novak.

That is the second time world No.175 Polmans has superior to the ultimate qualifying spherical at Flushing Meadows, matching his 2018 effort.

The 26-year-old Australian will play both Canadian Vasek Pospisil or American Zachary Svajda within the ultimate spherical.

Three extra Australians – Olivia Gadecki, Priscilla Hon and John Millman – are nonetheless to play their second-round matches.
