Atletico Madrid vs Real Betis Preview
Atletico Madrid host Real Betis in the second game on Sunday to have a big impact on the race for Champions League places. It’s 3rd vs 5th and an opportunity for Atleti to go 9 points clear of their opponents, the kind of advantage that would surely enable them to start planning for another UCL campaign in 2023/24.
Right now, it’s hard to argue with Atletico Madrid’s status as one of the top four teams in this league and in recent months Los Rojiblancos have lived up to their potential with some much improved displays and it feels like they are now much more settled in terms of selection and system.
There are even shades of their title winning 2020/21 side about the current structure with a back three, usually consisting of Mario Hermoso, Jose Maria Gimenez and Stefan Savic, delivering better defensive displays. We’ve also got Marcos Llorente back in a central role with licence to get forward. However the key man in Atleti’s revival has certainly been Antoine Griezmann with the Frenchman producing some excellent football in recent months.
He will be the driving force behind Atleti’s attack here but Real Betis will be missing some of their most dangerous players from a creative sense. Nabil Fekir is out for the season while Sergio Canales controversially starts a four game ban for words said to referee Mateu Lahoz earlier in the season. Betis are fuming about that and they face a real battle to sustain a top four challenge over the coming weeks.
In the absence of those two, Betis may look to January addition Ayoze Perez to provide some attacking inspiration. He has made quite a bright start to his Betis career and they’ll also want more from Borja Iglesias who has struggled to replicate his early season form of late. Rodri could come into the number 10 role but the focus here may be on matters at the other end of the pitch with what has been a slightly more expansive Atleti of late, likely to pose plenty of questions.

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Real Betis
Atletico Madrid have won 7 of their last 9 in LaLiga and they’ve scored 9 goals in their last 2 home games alone. That’s a big improvement on some lacklustre displays earlier on in the campaign and with Betis missing some key players, a home win looks likely here.
