Atletico Madrid vs Mallorca Preview
Mallorca travel to the Civitas Metropolitano this week for a game that doesn’t have a huge amount riding on it. Atleti are looking on course for a 3rd place finish unless Real Madrid really ease off in the final weeks of the season while Mallorca, who now have exactly 40 points, are destined for mid-table safety.
There have certainly been plenty of positives for Atleti since the World Cup with their form excellent overall while a much clearer structure has emerged. However, for all their good results, it’s still true that they have fallen just short in the big games against their main domestic rivals. The latest of those saw them lose 1-0 at Barcelona on Sunday having also been on the wrong end of the same scoreline against the same opposition in January.
Atleti’s only other defeat in 2023 came against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey. Diego SImeone would certainly have loved a first win at Camp Nou as Atleti boss, but he’ll still believe his team are heading in the right direction. Some rotation is likely here and they’ll be without the likes of Stefan Savic and Marcos Llorente due to injury, while Koke is also a doubt again and he was missed at the weekend in Barcelona.
Mallorca have been a real bogey team of late for Atleti. The Balearic side have won each of the last three meetings between the clubs including a 2-1 win on this ground last season. That should give the visitors plenty of belief that they can cause an upset although they’ll be aware that this week’s task may be much tougher than the meeting earlier this term when Atleti were going through a much more unconvincing spell.
Javier Aguirre will be in good spirits after his side claimed back-to-back wins to effectively end any threat of relegation. Mallorca can now look forward to a third straight season at this level and attention will soon turn to their summer recruitment plans. A big priority will be trying to hold onto Kang-in Lee who scored a brace in the 3-1 victory over Getafe last time out, taking his league tally to 5 goals and 4 assists, by far his best campaign to date.

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Mallorca
This is likely to be relatively low-scoring with Mallorca a capable defensive side that has a solid track record now of making life difficult for Atleti. The hosts are missing some important players too which may unsettle them in midfield but you’d still expect in-form Antoine Griezmann to produce a few moments of quality which could settle this in the home team’s favour.
