Athletic Club vs Getafe Preview
It’s already been a season of two halves for Athletic Club with a strong start followed by a disappointing campaign post the World Cup. They’ll be hoping the international break will provide the rest needed ahead of one last push with European football the aim. Getafe will settle for merely staying up and their recent form suggests they could be competitive here.
Athletic boss Ernesto Valverde also has the dilemma of whether to pick his strongest side ahead of Tuesday’s Copa del Rey Semi-Final 2nd Leg against Osasuna. His side are 1-0 down in that tie but there’s not a huge international contingent in his squad, so most players should be well rested ahead of these two games.
The Basque giants did at least go into the break on the back of an improved performance and positive result. They won 3-1 in Valladolid thanks to goals from Inigo Martinez, Gorka Guruzeta and Mikel Vesga. They are 7th as a result but only 2 points above in-form Celta Vigo in 10th so there is plenty of work to be done if Athletic want to return to the European stage in 2023/24.
As for Getafe, they also went into the break following victory with a crucial 2-0 triumph over relegation rivals Sevilla. That was a third straight home win and increasingly, Getafe are starting to look like a side with the tools required to stay afloat. Most notably, they have goals with Enes Unal and Borja Mayoral one of the better strike pairings in the league and the introduction of Munir into the side in recent weeks has supplemented that goal threat.
Quique Sanchez Flores appears to have found a system that is working for this Getafe team and while it took longer than he’d have liked this season, there is light at the end of the tunnel for fans of the South Madrid club. They’ll most likely seek to frustrate Athletic here with a back three and their wing-backs will need to defend well given the threat Athletic pose in the wide areas.

This could be a close game with Getafe showing a bit more over the past couple of months. However Athletic have home advantage and they’ll be hungry for a positive result as they seek to build momentum ahead of next week’s cup showdown with Osasuna. The hosts may have just enough to edge this.
