Arsenal could face William Saliba contract U-turn if Man City Premier League title clash ends in defeat

Should Arsenal lose against Manchester City on Wednesday it could have massive implications on the future of some of the Gunners’ most important players.

The Gunners travel to the Etihad with a five points advantage over title challengers City, though having played two games more.

However, Arsenal’s form has begun to stutter at the worst possible time. The north Londoners have claimed a point in each of their last three games, including drawing 3-3 with bottom-side Southampton last Friday.

Meanwhile, City are in imperious form, having won their last six league encounters and secured progress in both the FA Cup and Champions League.

Furthermore, their recent record against Arsenal is near flawless. City have won seven straight games against the Gunners, and 14 of their last 15.

It is arguably Arsenal’s biggest game since their Champions League final defeat to Barcelona back in 2006. And should they lose it will not only have implications on the title race but may affect the future of some of the club’s brightest stars.

Saliba to leave Arsenal?

Arsenal are locked in talks over a contract extension for William Saliba, whose current deal runs until the summer of 2024.

While the Gunners are reportedly optimistic about securing him to a bumper new deal, Saliba will have several suitors beyond north London.

Indeed, the 22-year-old has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain at various points this term, and should City win on Wednesday and ultimately claim the title, his future could become shrouded in uncertainty.

Arsenal’s title charge has been aided by Liverpool and Chelsea’s plight this term, and it is unlikely the Gunners will be in such a commanding position in future seasons.

Should Arteta’s men miss out on silverware this season, it could complicate Saliba’s contract negotiations.

Bukayo Saka is another highly coveted player whose contract at Arsenal expires in 2024.

Though, as a Hale End graduate, he is less likely than Saliba to seek a move, losing to City on Wednesday could make the 21-year-old consider his options.

Arsenal are in talks with Saka over a new contract amid reported interest from several top clubs – including City.
