Alcaraz Still under Injury Cloud after Hamstring Flare-up in Rio

Nine matches in 12 days to start the season has left Carlos Alcaraz surrounded by an injury cloud.

The Spaniard, who struggled with an injury to his upper right leg in his 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 loss to Cameron Norrie in Sunday’s Rio Open final, says he is struggling with the same injury that forced him to pull out of this year’s Australian Open.

“I felt pain in the same muscle where I had the injury last month,” he said on Sunday. “It’s hard. I have tried to play at my best level despite that setback.”

Alcaraz, who is 8-1 on the season with a title in Buenos Aires and a final in Rio, is slated to play in Acapulco as the top seed this week.

“It’s something to think about. I’m going to evaluate it with the physiotherapist and the doctor,” he said.

But it seems doubtful that he will risk further injury, with Indian Wells and Miami looming.

“We have to see how serious the injury is and see what I have in the hamstring, and, from there, evaluate to see if I can go to play in Acapulco without much risk,” he said.
