Atletico Madrid vs Osasuna Preview
Atletico Madrid play their penultimate home game of the 2022/23 season against Copa del Rey Finalists Osasuna on Sunday. Diego Simeone’s side are still in the hunt for 2nd place and would climb back above Real Madrid, for a couple of hours at least, with victory here.
There was a surprise setback last time out though for Atleti. Away to bottom club Elche, they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat in one of their worst showings of 2023. It was 9 wins from 10 in LaLiga prior to that for Diego Simeone’s team and they’d been scoring for fun so their failure to break down the division’s worst defence was truly unexpected, although home keeper Edgar Badia did deny them on occasions.
Finishing 2nd rather than 3rd will certainly be an incentive for the fans and it’d feel like a real turnaround from Diego Simeone’s perspective given the pressure he was under earlier in the campaign. There are still some big questions to address in the summer though, most notably what happens to the sizable loan contingent, including Joao Felix, who will return to the club.
Osasuna meanwhile are still in the fight for a European place and won’t be short on motivation here. It would have been easy for them to take their foot off the gas following the big cup final, but they played really well last weekend, beating Almeria 3-1 to put themselves at least in the conversation when it comes to clinching the Conference League place.
One of the goalscorers in that game was Abde Ez who has been impressive in Pamplona but is set to return to parent club Barcelona. He’ll take some replacing in the summer, unless Osasuna can find some way to get him back next term. Overall though, Osasuna still don’t really have a clear first choice attack with players frequently coming in and out of the team. The likes of Chimy Avila and Moi Gomez had to settle for a place on the bench last weekend and we can expect more rotation with midweek action a few days after this.

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Osasuna
Osasuna have frequently shown they can compete with the stronger teams in LaLiga but you’d expect Atletico Madrid to respond to last week’s upset at Elche. They’ve been in good form at home, winning their last 7 on this ground. However they have gone 7 without a clean sheet in LaLiga overall, so an away goal is certainly a possibility.
