Manchester United vs Sevilla Preview
Sevilla face a daunting trip to Old Trafford this week for the 1st Leg of their UEFA Europa League Quarter Final. While this is often seen as “their competition” with the Andalusians having won it a record six times, winning the Europa League again this year would surely go down as Sevilla’s most surprising and biggest European feat yet.
That’s not just because of the tough task they will face against United over two legs, but by virtue of what has been a disastrous domestic season for Sevilla. They are already onto their third coach of the campaign with José Luis Mendilibar having taken over since they knocked out Fenerbahce in the Last 16 of this competition. It has been a pretty good start for the former Eibar boss with 4 points from 2 league games edging his team further away from the relegation zone.
There will be more than an element of regret in the Sevilla camp that they couldn’t make it two wins from two though. Despite playing with 10 men for much of the game, Sevilla led Celta Vigo 2-0 at the weekend heading into the 89th minute but shipped two late goals to draw the game with Marcus Acuna also seeing red late on. There is still work to be done if Sevilla are to avoid a shock relegation, but with a 5 point cushion on the bottom three, they’re in a position to go for this game and see if they can at least keep the tie alive heading into next week’s 2nd Leg.
They face a Manchester United side who face Spanish opposition for the third round in a row in the Europa League having already seen off Barcelona and Real Betis. In theory, this should be an easier task for Erik ten Hag’s men but Sevilla have been something of a bogey side for United in the past.
There are also perhaps a few more doubts about Manchester United than was the case in February when they impressed against Barcelona. They’ve since been hammered 7-0 at Anfield and have looked vulnerable at times on the road, losing their most recent Premier League away game against Newcastle 2-0. That offers Sevilla a glimmer of hope, at least in the 2nd Leg of this tie, as their noisy fanbase are certainly capable of making the 2nd Leg a hostile experience for the English side.
Score Prediction: Manchester United 3-1 Sevilla
Sevilla have shown some positive signs in an attacking sense in recent months and will take a degree of confidence into this game following good results since the change in coach. An away goal is certainly a possibility but United should have too much firepower for an unconvincing Sevilla defence, even in the absence of key man Marcus Rashford.
