Fifty years after lifting the long-lasting Australian Open trophy for the primary time, Evonne Goolagong Cawley is being honoured for the unbelievable contribution she’s made to her sport, her nation and her heritage.
In a particular ceremony at Rod Laver Enviornment previous to the ladies’s semifinals this night, it was introduced that from 2025 the Australian Open’s annual celebration of First Nations tradition throughout week one shall be generally known as Evonne Goolagong Cawley Day.
At Australian Open 2025, the Australian Tennis Basis will host the Due to Evonne breakfast, adopted by a ceremonial stroll to Melbourne Park, with all funds raised going in direction of Goolagong Cawley’s life’s work – bettering the lives of Indigenous children by training and sport.
To have fun this milestone anniversary, Tennis Australia has donated $100,000 to ship Indigenous packages and proceed Evonne’s excellent lifelong work.
“We’re delighted to honour Evonne right here on the Australian Open at Rod Laver Enviornment, 50 years after her first Australian Open win and earlier than two blockbuster ladies’s semifinals,” Tennis Australia’s CEO Craig Tiley mentioned.
“Evonne exemplifies all that’s good and nice in our sport, each on and off the courtroom. She’s a shining instance of humility and style, and the dedication she’s proven over so a few years to serving to others is an inspiration to us all.
“We sit up for constructing on Evonne’s legacy and persevering with her extraordinary work.”
