Sevilla and Roma face off in the 2022/23 UEFA Europa League Final this Wednesday in Budapest. The Spanish side are already by far the most successful side in the competition’s history, winning this trophy six times, twice as many as any other club and they’d dearly love to write yet another chapter in their Europa League love affair this week.

To some extent, this triumph would be the most remarkable of the lot. Nobody seriously thought Sevilla could compete for this trophy when they limped out of the Champions League in late 2022, deep in the midst of a relegation fight in LaLiga. Things weren’t much better when their Europa League campaign got going either, but, as they often do, they saved some of their best football for this competition, seeing off PSV and Fenerbahce despite losing the away leg on both occasions.

Jorge Sampaoli was still in charge at that point but with Sevilla still struggling in the league, José Luis Mendilibar was drafted into the job in March. His remit was to keep Sevilla in LaLiga rather than win a European trophy and as such he rested key players for the trip to Manchester United in the 1st Leg of the Quarter Finals.

Huge underdogs, Sevilla fell 2-0 down and were largely outplayed only for two late own goals to throw them a Europa League lifeline. Since then though, it has been a remarkable transformation in their fortunes with some massively improved performances as United were swept aside 3-0 in the 2nd Leg before the Andalusians edged out Juventus in the last four, whilst also rapidly climbing the table in LaLiga.

Followers of Sevilla would surely be forgiven for thinking that their name is now on this trophy once more. The final obstacle is a formidable one though in the form of Roma and perhaps more specifically Jose Mourinho who himself boasts a very impressive record when it comes to winning European competitions and big Finals.

Roma have enjoyed a fabulous couple of years in Europe, starting out in the Play-Off Round for the Conference League last season and going all the way to win that competition which sealed a place in the Europa League.

They are now threatening to complete the full UEFA ladder by winning the Europa League and entering next season’s Champions League. They’ve seen off RB Salzburg, Real Sociedad, Feyenoord and Bayer Leverkusen in the knockout rounds to reach this point, having finished 2nd in their group to Sevilla’s city rivals Real Betis.

Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-1 Roma (AET)

Sevilla’s immense record in the latter stages of the Europa League and victories in all six of their previous Finals makes it hard to go against them on nights like this. Roma won’t be lacking confidence though after their own European exploits and Jose Mourinho will certainly have a plan but with a fully fit squad to take to Budapest, Mendilibar’s men may just edge this.
